On February 4, 1953, while on a night intruder mission, another aircraft heard the order to bail out. Captain Carmody was listed as Missing in Action and was presumed dead on January 2 5, 1954. For his leadership and valor, Captain Carmody was awarded the Distinquished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, The United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
