Bobby R. Hays

Serving in Korea--Army Pfc. Bobby R. Hays, 20 of Garfield Avenue, recently arrived in Korea and now is a member of the [24th??] Infantry Division. Hayes a clerk in Company H of the division's 34th Regiment, entered the Army in October, 1954, and completed basic training at Fort Dix. New Jersey.

Graduates in Korea--Pfc. Leonard L. Case, son of Leonard L. Case of Benzonia, recently graduated from the I Corps Supply Specialist School in Korea. He is a member of the 50th Engineer Company and entered the Army in July, 1954, going overseas the following December.

Returns from Korea--Pfc James W. Lutman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lutman, 524 1/2 Lake Avenue, has returned home from Korea, following one and a half years' service there. He was discharged on October 12th, and has returned to the Olofsson Tool and Die in Lansing.

Major Merle Hootman, formerly captain at the Empire Air Base, but now at an air base near Wayne, has received his orders for Korea. Before leaving for his new assignment, he will visit Mrs. Ethel Atkinson, Mrs. Hootman, daughter of Mrs. Atkinson intends making her home in Traverse City during Major Hootman's absense in Korea. The Hootmans have two children, Harry and Reta Jean.

Military Rites--A military funeral for First Lieutenant Leonard G. Lyon, native of this communityy and World War II veteran who was killed in Korea, Feb 13, 1951, was held this afternoon. The rosary was recited at the Martinson Funeral Home and military graveside services followed at which Fr. R. W. Passeno of the Immaculate Conception Church officiated and burial was made in Oakwood Cemetery.

Promoted to Corporal--A Traverse City arm man has been promoted to the rank of Corporal in Korea. Corporal John C. Hanell, son of Mrs. Lydia Anna Hanell, of Route No. 4, Traverser City, was promoted while serving in the 1st Cavalry Division 7th Cavalry Regiment. Hanell's unit has been on the Korean front since last July when it landed amphibiously at Pohang-dong. It was also the first unit to smash northward through the Taegu perimeter in September, leading UN forces in the spectacular drives into North Korea.

Serving in Korea--Pvt Robert V. Otis of Williamsburg R. 1 recently joined the 35th Infantry "Cacti" regiment in Korea. The 35th regiment is part of the 25th Infantry "Tropic Lightning" division commanded by Brig. Gen J. S. Bradley--the second U. S. Army Division committed to action against the Communists last July.

Pvt. Carl Gibbons, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Gibbons of Kalkaska county and a veteran of three years of service, has been reported wounded in Korea. Pvt. Gibbons went to Korea with the first American troops.

Service in Korea--Phillip G. Mulder, grandson of Lena Keaton on 912 Boyd Avenue, who enlisted in the U. S. Air Force, has been promoted to Corporal. He has seen much service in Korea but more recently is back with his regular training squadron of air police. Prior to entering the service Cpl. Mulder spent many summer vacations with his grandmother and friends here. He is the son of Mrs. Rose Mulder of Grand Rapids.

In Korea: Cpl James Pence who home is in this city has recently received a promotion from Pfc. to his present rank of Corporal. He is now in Korea assigned to the Anti-Tank company of the 20th Infantry Regiment. This 20th Regiment is a unit of the Sixth Infantry Division which is on occupation duty in southern Korea.

TRAVERSE CITY - Henry F. Dunklow, 68, of Traverse City, died Wednesday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Born May 9, 1931, in Lake Leelanau, he was the son of Henry and Katherine (Egeler) Dunklow. On Sept. 3, 1955, in Traverse City, he married the former Mary Bopry.

Henry served in the U.S. Marines during the Korean War. He was employed in the cherry processing industry for nearly 35 years, including Kroupa's, Inc. for 25 years and eight years at Underwood Orchards, retiring in 1994. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and enjoyed spending time with his family and working outdoors.

He is survived by a son, Douglas (Tamara) Dunklow of Ludington and Traverse City; two daughters, Kathleen (Scott) Beiser and Kristin Dunklow - both of Traverse City; two grandchildren, Kevin (Jennifer) Dohm of Lake Ann and Kelli Beiser of Traverse City; two brothers, Orville (Cecelia) Dunklow and Donald (Lucie) Dunklow - both of Lake Leelanau; three sisters, Dora Runge and Betty (Bernard) Belanger - both of Lake Leelanau and Edna Meslowski of Muskegon; a sister-in-law, Phyllis Dunklow, also of Lake Leelanau; and several nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes with Rev. Donald Engebretson officiating. The family will greet friends Friday at the funeral home from 1:30 p.m. until the time of service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church, Trinity Lutheran School, the American Cancer Society or Cherryland Humane Society.
