Completes Course--serving with the 545th Military Police Company of the First Cavalry Division, Pfc. Charles L. Ruggles, 20, so of Mr. and Mrs. B. D. Ruggles of Kewadin, recently completed a training course. He received his basic military training at Fort McClelland, Alabama, and prior to his assignment with the First Cavalry division he served in Korea and China. Pfc. Ruggles is a graduate of the radio repair schol at Eta Jima, Japan. Prior to entering the service on September 5, 1946, he was a student at Elk Rapids.

TRAVERSE CITY - Charles L. Ruggles, 71, a resident of Birchwood Nursing Home of Traverse City, died Wednesday. He was a resident of Traverse City for the past 28 years, previously of Centerline and Bay City, where he was employed by the State of Michigan.

Born April 19, 1929, in Hazel Park, he was the son of Beryl D. and Christina B. (Munroe) Ruggles.

Charles served in the Korean War with the 1st Calvary Division, U.S. Army. He was in the Korean Combat Zone from July 7, 1950 to Nov. 3, 1950, where he was wounded near the Chosin Reservoir also known as "Frozen Chosin." He received the Japan Occupation Medal, Korean Service Medal with three bronze stars, United Nations Service Medal, the Combat Infantry Badge and the Purple Heart. A participant with the VFW Post No. 2780 and the Disabled American Veterans, he was a long standing member of the VFW Post No. 485 in Bay City. Charles was an avid reader and enjoyed music, baseball and most importantly the Detroit Tigers.

He is survived by his sisters, Mary Ruggles of Hazel Park and Margaret L. "Meg" (Leslie) Walton of Traverse City; brothers, Glenn I. (Margee) Ruggles of Union Lake and Eugene G. Ruggles of San Francisco; his uncle; many nieces and nephews; and a close friend, Mary Rancour of Bay City. He was preceded in death by his parents, Beryl D. and Christina B. Ruggles.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes with Rev. Bill Haggard officiating. Military honors will be under the auspices of the VFW Post No. 2780. Visitation will be from noon Saturday at the funeral home until the time of service. Interment will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
