Marine Private First Class Edward Galla, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Galla of Cedar, was promoted to his present rank when he was recently graduated from 'boot camp.' Galla climaxed his recruit training by winning the marksman medal on a score of 202 out of a possible 250 during his weapons training. In addition to firing the Garand rifle for qualification. Galla fired other infantry weapons such as the .45 calibre pistol, carbine, and Browning automatic rifle. Galla enlisted in the Marine Corps on Februaru 27, 1951. He will be transferred from Parris Island to a Marine Corps unit serving on land, sea or in the air.

Coxswain Ronald Grubb is home on R 1, Peninsula Center road for a 30 day furlough from naval duty at Boston. Since entering service he has been on crash boat duty, meeting incoming transports. He was hospitalized five months when a plane crashed into a boat, injuring many of the crew of which Grubb was a member. His brother Military Police Sergeant Robert Grubb, is serving his fifth year, having seen action in New Guinea and the Philippines. He is now stationed at Marila.

Ernest George Zetzman, Jr.

CADILLAC - Ernest George Zetzman, Jr. of Fife Lake passed away Dec. 18, 2008 at Munson Hospice House after enduring Alzheimers. He was 73.

Ernie was born Feb. 22, 1935 to Ernest George and Agatha (Treichel) Zetzman Sr. in Lansing. He graduated from J.W. Sexton High School in Lansing where he was the Senior Class President in 1953. Ernie graduated from Michigan State University in 1958 with a Building Construction Management degree.

After college, he served in the U.S. Army in Korea and was honorably discharged. He married Billie Joanne Holmes June 4, 1960 in Lansing. Ernie worked for the State of Michigan for 37 years, retiring as a property appraiser for the Treasury Department. He had many friends in the northern Michigan county buildings.

Ernie had a lifetime passion for outdoor sports and the beauty in nature. He was a member of Hiawatha Sportsman Club, Ducks Unlimited and was an exceptional marksman. Sharing his love of hunting, fishing, golfing and athletic events with family and friends gave him great pleasure. His zest for life, words of encouragement, loving kindness and service to others will be remembered by many.

Ernie is survived by Billie Joanne Zetzman, his loving wife of 48 years who cared for him at home and daughters Shari (Pat) Johnson of Cadillac, Gretchen (Jeff) Knoblock of Traverse City and Karen (Dr. Steven) Mast of Traverse City. He was a beloved grandfather to 12 grandchildren, Ethan, Nick, Rachel and Lexi Johnson, Blake, Grant, Max and Chase Knoblock and Katie, Marshall, Mari and Stevie Mast. He is also survived by his sister, Joyce Cary and family of Mason and aunts, Ella Smith and Virginia Albro.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A funeral service will take place 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 22, 2008 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 11198 E. M-55, Cadillac.

Officiating will be Dr. Bryan Salminen, Pastor. Family and friends are invited to a visitation from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Hitesman-Holdship Funeral Home, 620 N. Mitchell in Cadillac. Interment will be in the Deepdale Cemetery in Lansing. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Emmanuel Lutheran Church Building Fund in memory of Ernie Zetzman.

Silver Lake Grange home was the setting for a 50th wedding anniversary party Sunday from 1:00 to 5:00 when Mr. and Mrs. Erva Youmans entertained their friends and neighbors and relatives at an open house in honor of their 50th anniversary. Golden chrysanthemums decorated the room and a large anniversary cake centered the serving table. Guests were from Traverse City, Detroit, Grand Rapids, Mesick, and Grawn. Their son, James Youman of Muskegon and his family were unable to attend.

Man Victim of Home Fire in Leelanau 29 Nov 1971 page 1 and 11
Michael J. King (Clement) King, 56, of county road 643 near Cedar, Leelanau County, was burned to death early Sunday morning when fire destroyed the farm home in which he was living. Police and the Leelanau county medical examiner said the boy was almost totally consumed by the flames.

The fire was first observed by Patrick Fitpatrick of R. 2, Cedar, at 5:55 a.m. when flames from the home, located across the road from his own house, lighted up his living room.
Fitpatrick told his wife to call the Cedar Volunteer Fire Department and he rushed across the road to the house engulfed in flames with fire pouring from the roof. Unable to enter it, he pushed the car parked alongside it away from the flames.

Mrs. Fitpatrick told state police she had looked at the house shortly before her husband observed the flames and saw nothing amiss. She said she had seen the car driven into the yard and parked alongside the house at approximately 11:30 p.m. Saturday evening.
George Rosinski, a member of the Cedar Fire Department was enroute hunting when he saw the flames shooting from the house as he arrived at the intersection of county roads 645 and 643. He said the fire was pouring from the center of the structure through the roof.

Rosinski drove to Cedar, triggered the alarm and drove the fire truck to the scene of the blaze. He was unable to enter the house which by this time was a roaring inferno.
Assistant Fire Chief Andrew Pleva, who lives in the first house west of the fire scene, hurried to the home and attempted to enter it through a rear door which led to another rear door into the structure. He was unable to force his way through the second door because of intense smoke and flames.

The house was owned by Pleva who was purchasing it from King. It was a two-story L-shaped structure heated by an oil space-heater located in the center of the home. An electrical junction was also located at this point in the house. The house was burned to the ground without even the walls remaining.

Police and fireman believe the blaze originated near the center of the structure on the first floor. The body was found in the pantry area.

Mr. King of Solon Township was born Dec. 28, 1914, the son of Michael and Theresa King. He worked for Koenig Construction Company in Traverse City for 15 years and for the past 10 years was employed with Pleva's Market in Cedar. He was a member of Holy Rosary Church, Isadore.

He is survived by three brothers, Dominick and Edward, both of Traverse City and John of Cedar; five sisters, Mrs. Tillie Flaska and Mrs. Rose Holt, both of Maple City; Mrs. Veronica Zielkowski and Mrs. Francis Stanislawski, both of Cedar, and Mrs. Harold Barr of Traverse City.

A rosary will be recited this evening at 8 p.m. at Ray Martinson funeral home in Suttons Bay and the fuenral mass will be conducted at 10 a. m. Tuesday at Holy Rosary Church in Isadore with the Rev. Father Benedict Marciulionis as celebrant. Burial will be made in Cavalry cemetery.

Traverse City - Chester L. Flees, age 83, of Traverse City, died Tuesday at Bortz Health Care in Traverse City.
Chester lived in the area all of his life. Born in Isadore, on June 10, 1919, he was the son of Adam and Mary (Mikowski) Flees.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in the Pacific. One of the battles he fought in was for the island of Iwo Jima.

Chester was a finish carpenter and had worked for the Hannah Lay and Red Mill Lumber Companies. Over the years, he had made several boats, lots of kitchen cabinets and furniture. He even built his own house using only hand tools. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Cherryland VFW Post. He enjoyed camping and boating.

Surviving are a son Larry C. (E. Jane) Flees of Traverse City. two granddaughters, Kristie (Christopher) Coddington of Traverse City and Kimberly Flees of Traverse City; his sister, Alice (Horace) Stoodt of Bellville, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

Chester was preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia (Perszyk) Flees; and a sister, Agnes Bauman.
Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Thursday, Aug. 15, from 6 to 8 p.m., where a Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 16, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with the Rev. Father James Hayden as celebrant. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens, with military honors conducted by the Cherryland VFW Post 2790. Memorial donations may be made to the Cherryland VFW Post 2780 or to Mass Intentions.

Owen L. Dixon, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Dixon, 3140 Valk street, Muskegon, formerly of Buckley, has been promote3d to corporal while serving with the 772 Military Police Battalion in Korea. He is in Company C of "Seven-Seven Duce" one of the oldest M. P. outfits in Korea. Cpl. Dixon spent his school days in Buckley where he graduated with the 1950 high school class. Following graduation he went to Muskegon where he was employed at the Central Paper mill. Entering the army in April, 1953, Cpl. Dixon received his basic training, at Camp Atterbury, Indiana training in Korea January, 1954.

Pfc Russell Chippewa, son of Mrs. E. Chippewa, Omena Route 1, (Leelanau County) is currently serving with United Nations troops in Korea as a gunner in the machine gun platoon of Company M, 187th Regiment, of the 11th Airborne Division. Chippewa recently participated in a regimental task force drive by the 187th Regiment against North Korean resistance along the Tongjin peninsula north of Seoul where he was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge.

Sgt. Russell Chippewa, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Chippewa of Rt. 1, Omena (Leelanau County, Michigan) has been spending a 35-day furlough at his home prior to being sent to Europe for assignment. He is a member of the 511th Airborne Infantry regiment of the 11th Airborne Division. Sgt. Chippewa has served in Korea. He enlisted in 1942, receiving his basic treaining at Fort Hood, Texas.

TRAVERSE CITY - Richard Lee Larson, 70, of Traverse City, passed away Wednesday.

Richard was born in Flint on March 6, 1930, the son of the late Harry and Beatrice (Price) Larson. He lived in Traverse City since 1970.

Richard was a Grand Blanc High School graduate, class of 1948. He served in the U.S. Navy for four years during the Korean War. He was a soil scientist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, retiring in 1979. Richard was a member of the Central United Methodist Church in Traverse City and supported the Boy Scouts of America. He loved camping, boating, yoga, reading, gardening, beaches, skiing and nature.

He is survived by two daughters, Major Laura Larson of the U.S. Air Force, Beavercreek, Ohio and Mia (Thomas) Harrigan of Traverse City; three granddaughters, Bethany, Jessica and Kristen; three brothers, Kenneth James (Toni) Larson of Fife Lake, Harry Bruce Larson of Holly and Donald Thomas (Martha) Larson of Houston, Texas; two sisters, Gail (Peter) Hutchinson and Cathy (Thomas) Skellett - all of Flint; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a former wife, Doris (Moody) Larson; two daughters, Lisa and Lynn; one son, Larry; and a grandson, Jacob.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Hill Funeral Home, 11723 S. Saginaw St. in Grand Blanc. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Pastor Dean Bailey officiating. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery, where a graveside military salute and flag presentation will be performed by the Flint VFW Post No. 822.

Walter J. Younglas

TRAVERSE CITY - Walter J. Younglas, 77, of Traverse City, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005. He was born March 19, 1927, in Sault Saint Marie, to Peter and Elfia (DeTour) Younglas. He married Lucille Korson on May 17, 1952, at St. Wenceslaus Church in Gills Pier.

Walter graduated from St. Francis High School in 1946. He had been a resident of Traverse City since 1927, and was employed with Cherryland Electric for 28 years. He also worked as a cost accountant.

He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War.

Walter is survived by eight sisters-in-law, Mrs. Clarence (Julia) Rieger of Traverse City, Miss Philomena Korson of Grand Rapids, Mrs. John (Bernadine) Gallagher Sr. of Cedar, Mrs. John (Catherine) McLenithan of Rapid River, Mrs. Gary (Emma) Gallagher of Traverse City, Mrs. Ray (Helen) Galla of Lake Leelanau, Mrs. Thomas (Magdalen) Gavin of Grand Rapids and Miss Ann Korson of Grand Rapids; three brothers-in-law, Philip (Joan) Korson of Lake Leelanau, Martin (Phyllis) Korson of Suttons Bay and Sylvester (Marie) Korson of Suttons Bay; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held today, Feb. 25, 2005, at the Covell Funeral Home in Traverse City, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., with a rosary to be prayed at 7:30 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005, at 11 a.m., at St. Francis Catholic Church in Traverse City. Burial will take place at Oakwood Cemetery.

Pfc. Kenneth P. Hubbell, 19, former Elk Rapids High School football star, is now being treated at Percy Jones Hospital in Battle Creek, recovering from injuries received when the truck in which he was riding was struck by enemy.

Pfc. Hubbell,, who enlisted in the army in November 1949, was stationed with occupation troops in Japan prior to going into Korea with the 25th Infantry Division.

Traverse City-- Hubble, 73, of Traverse City, died on Friday, Feb 6, 2004, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Born on July 9, 1931 in Ypsilanti, he was the son of Harvey and Lillian Hubble. He married his wife, Beverly Stites on March 10, 1975, in Traverse City.

As a truck driver, Ken drove for Michigan Milk Producer's Assoc., Chef Pierre and Peninsula Asphalt Company before retiring. He served our country in the U. S. Army in the Korean War.

He truly enjoyed life and being raised in Elk Rapids. One of his fond memories was being the kicker on the old six-man Elk Rapids High School team.

Playing the guitar and singing were special moments to Ken. The band he played with the "Over the Hill Gang" performing various sites around Traverse City and entertained the residents of the Grand Traverse Pavilions as well. He found relaxation from traveling and camping.

Surviving Ken are his wife, Beverly, of Traverse City; three daughters, Janice (Larry) Hockin of Williamsburg, Susan (Terry) Stuart of Grawn and Linda Hubble of Williamsburg and William (Becky) Hubble of Lafayette, Colo; eight grandchildren, Heather, Ryan, Nathan, Shannon, Rachele, Branden, Katie and Anna; one sister, Sandy Pervis of Traverse City and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and three brothers.

Visitation will be held on Monday, Feb 9 2004, from 5 to 8 p. m. at the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. A funeral service will take place at 11 am.m on Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, also at the funeral home, with additional visitaion one our prior to the service. the Rev. Gary Gladfelter from the Elk Rapids Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Elk Rapids.

Memorial contributions in the honor of Kenneth may be made to the Elk Rapdis Baptist Church or the Immanuel Baptist Church of Traverse City.

Traverse City-- George Duane Hingston, 73, of Traverse City, formerly of Mackinaw City, died Saturday, May 8, 2004, at his home after and extended illness.

He was born in St. Ignace on Feb. 15, 1931, the son of George W. and Helen L. (Moran) Hingston. On Nov. 30, 1957, he married Joyce Stafford in Traverse City.

Mr. Hingston was a steward with Great Lakes Freighters, retiring in 1988. He was a member of the Cherryland VFW Post #2780, American Legion, and the Eagles. George served in the U. S. Marine Corps during the Korean conflict. He enjoyed cooking, gardening, and riding his bike around town, especially to the Farmer's Market. In his earlier years he liked to get out and snowmobile.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce Hingston of Traverse City; daughter, Sandy Hingston of Traverse City; two sisters, Yvonne Bourrie and Nancy Wilkie of Florida; special nephew, Jeff Hingston of Mackinaw City; niece, Susan Rose of Grant; and many other nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Michael Duane Hingston; three brothers, Francis, Gilbert and David; and a sister, Irene.

Visitation will take place Monday, May 10, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 12, under the auspices of the Cherryland VFW Post #2780 at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. Chaplain Ken Thomas will officiate.

Traverse City-- Vasalia 'Charlie' Nickita, age 82, of Traverse City, died on Sunday, Jan 11, 2004. He was born on Dec. 10, 1921, in Cass Lake, Minn., the son of Lena Bater and Basala Nechita. On July 10, 1944, in Marysville, Calif., he married the former Alberta 'Birdie' Walden.

Charlie served in the U. S. Army during WWII, and was enlisted throughout the Korean conflict. He retired from the military in 1965. He and his wife owned and operated the Torch Riviera Bar and Restaurant until the later 1960's. He then went to work as a U. S. postal mail carrier, delivering mail in the Rapid City area, where he retired again. He and Alberta then moved to Brimley where they opened and operated Fishermans Wharf R. V. Park.

Charlie was a member of the Kalkaska Post and the Moose Lodge.

He enjoyed traveling throughout the world with his wife. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors of Charlie include his loving wife, Alberta 'Birdie' of Traverse City; sisters, Rose Moyer and Sylvia Twork, both of Detroit; brothers Nick Nechita and George Nechita, both of St. Clair Shores; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Covell Funeral Home in Traverse City. A funeral service will take place at 11 a. m. on Friday, Jan 16, 2004, also at the funeral home.
