Traverse City - Chester L. Flees, age 83, of Traverse City, died Tuesday at Bortz Health Care in Traverse City.
Chester lived in the area all of his life. Born in Isadore, on June 10, 1919, he was the son of Adam and Mary (Mikowski) Flees.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in the Pacific. One of the battles he fought in was for the island of Iwo Jima.

Chester was a finish carpenter and had worked for the Hannah Lay and Red Mill Lumber Companies. Over the years, he had made several boats, lots of kitchen cabinets and furniture. He even built his own house using only hand tools. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Cherryland VFW Post. He enjoyed camping and boating.

Surviving are a son Larry C. (E. Jane) Flees of Traverse City. two granddaughters, Kristie (Christopher) Coddington of Traverse City and Kimberly Flees of Traverse City; his sister, Alice (Horace) Stoodt of Bellville, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

Chester was preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia (Perszyk) Flees; and a sister, Agnes Bauman.
Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Thursday, Aug. 15, from 6 to 8 p.m., where a Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 16, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with the Rev. Father James Hayden as celebrant. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens, with military honors conducted by the Cherryland VFW Post 2790. Memorial donations may be made to the Cherryland VFW Post 2780 or to Mass Intentions.
