Traverse City-- George Duane Hingston, 73, of Traverse City, formerly of Mackinaw City, died Saturday, May 8, 2004, at his home after and extended illness.

He was born in St. Ignace on Feb. 15, 1931, the son of George W. and Helen L. (Moran) Hingston. On Nov. 30, 1957, he married Joyce Stafford in Traverse City.

Mr. Hingston was a steward with Great Lakes Freighters, retiring in 1988. He was a member of the Cherryland VFW Post #2780, American Legion, and the Eagles. George served in the U. S. Marine Corps during the Korean conflict. He enjoyed cooking, gardening, and riding his bike around town, especially to the Farmer's Market. In his earlier years he liked to get out and snowmobile.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce Hingston of Traverse City; daughter, Sandy Hingston of Traverse City; two sisters, Yvonne Bourrie and Nancy Wilkie of Florida; special nephew, Jeff Hingston of Mackinaw City; niece, Susan Rose of Grant; and many other nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Michael Duane Hingston; three brothers, Francis, Gilbert and David; and a sister, Irene.

Visitation will take place Monday, May 10, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 12, under the auspices of the Cherryland VFW Post #2780 at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. Chaplain Ken Thomas will officiate.
